Description
40 High Street is a two-storey terraced building dating from the early 18th century. It features a painted stucco front with a rusticated finish and a deep-eaved roof that has imitation slates and square eaves brackets. The roof is continuous with the adjacent building at No 42. The façade consists of five bays, with narrow sash windows on the upper floor that are characteristic of early 18th-century design, complete with stepped stucco voussoirs and keystones.
The ground floor slopes steeply and includes a through-way at the right end, which has a cambered arch, stucco voussoirs, and a keystone. To the left, there are three bays that contain a 20th-century shopfront featuring two square shop windows with thick hardwood 9-pane glazing and a recessed glazed door in between. The rear wall is roughcast and has been renewed with modern windows. The interiors have been completely modernised and are currently used as offices.
