Description
46 High Street is one of a pair of houses featuring double recessed front doors beneath a two-storey square oriel window. While No 44 is roughcast, No 46 is finished in stucco and has a slate roof with overhanging flat eaves. No 46 has a rebuilt large square brick stack with an external chimney breast, whereas No 44 has no chimney. The building stands three storeys high and has five bays overall, with each half displaying a two-window range of sashes that share part of the oriel. The top floor features nine-pane sashes, while the first floor has 12-pane sashes, which have been replaced with plate glass in No 46. The central oriel has two 4-pane sashes on the first floor front and narrow lights on the sides, with a flared apron between floors and two smaller plate-glass sashes above, accompanied by narrow side lights. No 44 includes a 20th-century bowed shop window, while No 46 has a mid-20th-century metal-framed office window flanked by stucco pilasters, with a fascia and cornice above. Both houses have recessed doors at the center, featuring 20th-century six-panel doors.
The interiors have been altered, but both houses retain a late 18th-century small dog-leg staircase, which includes a bulbous turned newel, closed string, and small turned column balusters. The upper newels are square with chamfered edges, and there are four flights of stairs. An iron column is located in front of the window.
