Description

43 High Street is a two-storey shop and house with an attic, featuring a painted stucco gable front and bargeboards on an overhanging roof, designed to resemble slates. The building has a one-window range, with a small plate glass sash window in the attic. The first floor includes a canted timber oriel window from the late 19th century, which has casements and top-lights, and is adorned with a moulded cornice above a late 19th-century shop front. The shop front has a canted window on the right and a door on the left, framed by four pilasters with panelled lower sections and panels beneath the capitals. The fascia above the shop window is canted out, featuring raised fluted blocks over the pilasters and a moulded top cornice. The door is recessed, accessed by four stone steps, and is three-quarters glazed with an overlight.

To the left of the oriel is a late 19th-century clock mounted on a Gothic pierced cast-iron bracket, with a decorative pierced metal ring surrounding the clock faces. The east side of the building, facing Hill Lane, has a late medieval or 16th-century corbelled chimney breast on the first floor. The painted stucco on the right side is the return of the High Street front, featuring one small plate glass sash window on the ground floor. To the left, there is roughcast walling with a corbelled chimney above a small two-light window, and a larger two-light window stepped up with a line of slope, along with a first-floor hornless 12-pane large sash window above. Another window of similar size but with later glazing, likely replacing a small-paned sash, is located to the left, along with a door at the extreme left.

The interior of the shop has been altered and contains two encased beams, while the rest of the interior has not been inspected.
