Description

The Former Forecourt Stables at St Donats Castle is a building constructed with local lias limestone rubble walls and Bath stone dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. It features two adjacent wings, with a shorter wing at the south-west end. The building is one storey high with an attic and primarily showcases later 19th century or early 20th century ground floor windows. It underwent renovations in the later 20th century, during which the walls were raised and the roof and attic floors were added.

In the northern wing, both the front and rear elevations include four modern hipped 2-light dormers and one gabled stone 2-light dormer. On the ground floor facing the yard, there is a 3-light window with leaded lights and a dripstone, a single light opening, and a 4-centred doorway with a door featuring coverstrips. On the north-west (forecourt) elevation, the ground floor has a 3-light mullioned ashlar framed window with dripstones flanking a flat-arched ashlar doorway that has a modern door with coverstrips.

At the south-west end, there is a second renovated wing with a wide gable facing north-west, which has modern windows. This includes a single light window on either side of a 4-centred arch doorway and a 4-light modern window with a dripstone on the first floor. This design may have been inspired by the window inserted into the north-west end of the former Tithe Barn, now known as St. Donat's Arts Centre, as seen in pre-restoration photographs.

The interior details were not available during the resurvey.
