Description

St Donats Arts Centre is a building featuring local lias limestone rubble walls, partly rendered, and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The south-west elevation, which faces the Castle, includes a ventilator slit in a blocked doorway with stone dressings and voussoirs, along with a small opening above it, beneath the eaves. There is a central wide segmentally arched barn doorway flanked by full-height buttresses that are faced with pebbledash; the arch has likely been rebuilt. The south-east part of this elevation is also faced in pebbledash. The south-east end has a high-set 2-light window with a dripstone in the gable.

On the north-east elevation, there are quoins and a deep arched barn doorway in the center, with a single light window slit to the left and a lower segmentally arched doorway to the right, which appears to be an alteration. There is also a small opening under the eaves. Attached to the south-east end of the barn is a lower wing with stone walls, featuring a segmental doorway and window on the ground floor, a single light window on the first floor, and a 2-light mullioned window in the attic. The wing that extends at right angles to this, on the south-west, seems to be largely from the 1970s.

The interior of the main barn area was not available for inspection during the resurvey, but it is known to have whitewashed walls and an eight-bay collar truss roof. The south-east wing has a ground floor with two chamfered ceiling beams.
