Description
Ysguborwen is a barn built from local sandstone rubble, featuring some dressed quoins and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The west wall includes two slit vents on either side of the cart entry, which has been infilled with modern glazing, and there is a small hood on brackets above. The roof is plain and steeply pitched, with a tall metal stove pipe. The east wall is similar, but it has an additional window on the lower level to the left and only one vent on each side. The north gable features a glazed taking-in door leading to the hayloft. The south gable is mostly obscured by a modern single bay extension, which has a casement window on each floor of the west wall and another in the gable end, while the east wall remains blind. The triangular vents noted by Fox and Raglan are mostly hidden.
The barn consists of five bays and is supported by four massive A-frame trusses, with the outer trusses being upper crucks that extend well down into the walls. The principals are halved and pegged at the apex. There are three tiers of purlins, some of which have been replaced, and the secondary rafters and roof covering were updated in 1993. The interior has been largely modernized, and the original threshing floor is no longer present.
