Description
The stables at Heol-ddu are a tall stable range built in rubble masonry, featuring an almost symmetrical front and a roof made of corrugated steel sheeting. The structure has two slit ventilators for the loft on both the left and right sides. There are boarded stable doors at the end bays, and the central cart entrance has been narrowed. Each side of the cart entrance has one inserted window, and all openings have timber lintels. The downhill gable end includes outside stairs leading up to a similar doorway, while the uphill end has a modern lean-to. A datestone is centrally located at a high level, and there are small blocked stable ventilation holes in the rear elevation.
Inside, the roof structure consists of six bays with light 19th-century trusses, and the loft floor structure has eight bays supported by large main beams. The loft vents are designed to splay internally.
