Description
The limekiln, located to the south-west of Castle Quarry, is a Grade II listed structure built from uncoursed limestone rubble. It is positioned away from the road, with a straight front featuring two working archways side by side, separated by a stone pier that is less than a metre wide. The kiln extends from higher ground, with a sunken cartway in front flanked by high banks. Each access archway measures about 3 metres in length and has neat semicircular vaults with a span of approximately 2.5 metres, constructed in rubble stonework. The low working openings are angled inwards, allowing entry to the kiln at about 90 degrees apart. The top of the kiln is overgrown, but a depression suggests it has an internal diameter of about 4 metres at the top.
