Description

The building is a former dwelling located at the rear of Heol-ddu, dating from an unspecified period. It is a two-storey house with an attic, constructed from rubble sandstone masonry, which is brought to courses at the front and randomly coursed elsewhere. The building features ashlar quoins and shows considerable traces of whitewash. The roof has a 45-degree pitch and has been restored with modern single-lap tiles at the front, while the rear is slated but in a ruinous state. There are ashlar end chimneys, with the left chimney being larger and serving the original kitchen.

The front elevation includes a range of three windows that are slightly asymmetrical to accommodate the kitchen hearth. The windows have cambered arch heads, but no sills remain, and there are remnants of casement windows with central mullions. The front also features a wide door measuring 1.32 meters, without an overlight. The left gable elevation has attic windows with dripmoulds on either side of the chimney, while the right gable elevation has similar attic windows, with the rear window blocked. The rear elevation contains two blocked stair windows and a wide door on the left with a small barred window above. There are beam holes indicating a former extension on the right, which does not appear to have connected internally with the house. A datestone is positioned at a high level centrally on the left gable wall.

The original layout seems to have followed a common plan with a central entrance opposite a staircase, although no internal partitioning remains. The roof structure consists of five bays, with a wider central bay indicative of this plan type. The kitchen was located on the left side, featuring a large kitchen hearth with an inserted masonry pier to its right and an inserted boiler for animal feed. Nearby is a corn-dryer. In the right part of the ground storey, which was previously the parlour, there are stillages of stone slabs on stone piers against the front and end walls.

The first and attic floors have collapsed, but some rotten beams are still present. The building was noted to be in very poor condition during inspections in 1992 and 1998.
