Description
Bont Newydd is a picturesque single-arch segmental bridge located across a bend in the river Gwendraeth Fach in a narrow valley. The bridge, constructed from limestone, has a span of approximately 5 meters and does not feature an emphasized keystone. The thin course of the bridge is slightly corbelled at the level of the parapet base.
The carriageway measures about 3.6 meters in width between the parapets. The parapets are made of random rubble, with original copings of large limestone blocks still intact on one side. The upstream parapet extends for around 10 meters, while the downstream parapet stretches for about 15 meters.
To protect the outer (right) bank of the river bend both upstream and downstream from the bridge, there is revetment made of large limestone blocks extending for approximately 20 meters. Just below the bridge, there is a shallow area over a rock ledge, which is likely the remains of a ford that existed before the bridge was built.
