Description

The stables at Huntington House date from the late 18th century, with additions and alterations made in the later 19th century at the rear. The building is primarily constructed of random rubble with ashlar dressings, and some walls at the rear are harled.

The front elevation features a long, simple classical design with five bays, centered on a depressed arch that includes a keystone and impost blocks. There are four windows symmetrically flanking the arch, with margins that are broached, droved, and chamfered. The windows in the outer bays have consoled cornices. The base and eaves course are made of ashlar, and the building has rusticated quoins. The piended roof is topped with a centrally placed wooden spirelet from the mid-19th century, which includes circular mouldings that may have been intended for clockfaces.

The rear and side elevations are plainer and feature more irregular alterations and additions from the 19th century, surrounding a courtyard that opens to the north. These additions include garaging, stables, stores, a hayloft, and a stable cottage, with various door and window openings.

The windows are timber sash and case, with nine panes on the external elevations. There is a variety of timber doors, except for the archway, which has been infilled with corrugated iron sheeting and features a door made of the same material.

The roof is covered in ungraded grey Welsh slates and is piended, except for the north gable of the stable cottage, which has a skew, and the pointed bell-cast roof of the central spirelet, which is finished with fishscale slates and a weathervane.

Inside, the stable stalls remain in use and are simply constructed with heavy timber boarding and thin iron bars.
