Description
The Youth Hostel Association and Heritage Centre, formerly a primary school, is a mid-Victorian Gothic building featuring a symmetrical single-storey and attic design. It has outer cross-gables and paired gables at the center, with lateral extensions at the outer ends. The structure is built with rubble walls and freestone dressings, complemented by rusticated quoins. The slate roofs are adorned with cresting and have rubble and brick chimney stacks. The outer gables include parapets and attics that are illuminated by small rectangular lights.
The outer windows are notable for their grouped 4-light cusped design, set beneath banded relieving arches. The center of the building is slightly set back and features two steep-pitched gables, ornamental bargeboards with scissor braces, and 2-light bar traceried windows. To the right, there is a pitched roof rubble porch with a Berkeley arch leading to the entrance. Additionally, there are two later additions that extend forward to the street, featuring square-headed windows. The rear of the side elevations includes Gothic windows.
