Description

The Old School is a late 19th-century Gothic building constructed from coursed rubble, ashlar, and moulded brick dressings, topped with a slate roof featuring 20th-century crested ridge tiles. It consists of a single-storey school and a two-storey schoolhouse arranged in a single asymmetrical range. The school, located on the right, has an off-centre projecting gable with corbelled verges that create a decorative canopy supported by curved and pierced brackets. The upper gable is inscribed with the year '1877' and features a boarded bellcote above. Below, there is a large two-light transom window adorned with a Gothic hood mould and an inset recessed quatrefoil. The transoms preserve their original 19th-century glazing, with 4+4 pane windows below the transom and 2+2 above. On either side of the centre gable, there are gabled doorways with corbelled canopies, each featuring a shouldered arch with a quatrefoil in the recessed tympanum and a boarded door fitted with floriated strap hinges. To the far left, there is a four-pane casement window, and to the far right, another canopied two-light transom, with a similar transom located in the north gable.

The schoolhouse on the left has a central doorway with a flat canopy, flanked by four-pane horned sash windows under flush Gothic hoods, as well as an attic gablet with similar detailing. Inside, the schoolroom, which has had its fittings removed, features a plain interior with a 19th-century fireplace along the long wall, which has a shouldered architrave and inset ventilators. The roof is ceiled at the collar. The schoolhouse includes a staircase opposite the entry, characterized by an open string and simple square-section balusters. The fireplaces in the upper bedrooms have chamfered architraves and small 19th-century register grates.
