Description

The Steppes, which includes a railed forecourt, is a two-storey building with a mix of materials and architectural features. The northwest gable is constructed of rubble stone, while the other sides are rendered and painted. It has a slate roof with brick end stacks, and the south gable features a projecting chimneystack. The front elevation is irregular, with external render that has incised lines mimicking ashlar stonework.

On the first floor, there are three casement windows with two over two panes, each with thin stone sills. The ground floor features, from left to right, a two over two casement window, a camber-headed entrance doorway, a small canted bay window with a flat roof and two over four over two panes, and a doorway leading to a former Post Office. The double doors have glazed top panels, each with two panes separated by a horizontal glazing bar. Above the entrance is a monopitch porch canopy covered in fishscale slates, supported by tall arched brackets that rise from moulded wall posts, which have pierced trefoils in the spandrels. The northwest gable has a projecting wall from a former bread oven at ground level.

In front of the house, there is a raised garden that overlooks the roadway, enclosed by a low wall with spear-headed railings and an iron gate. Inside, there is an entry into a cross passage. The ground floor room on the left has a transverse chamfered ceiling beam, likely reused, and a deep fireplace recess. The room on the right is partitioned, while the room to the southeast features axial chamfered ceiling beams with Wern-hir stops, which include hollow and fillet stops.
