Description

The Blue Lion Hotel is a two-storey building constructed of rubble stone, featuring a high plinth and a slate roof. It has a central stone ridge stack, a stone end stack on the right return, and a red brick stack on the left end. There is an outbuilding projecting forward from the left end and a splayed corner on the right. The main front has four windows with casement designs; the right-hand windows on both floors are notable for their small diamond-paned glazing, with a 2-light window on the first floor and a 3-light window below, both having cambered voussoired heads. The three first-floor windows on the left are all 9-pane metal-framed casements, and some alterations are indicated by a masonry joint. The main entrance is located to the right between the third and fourth bays, featuring a porch supported by cast-iron columns with foliated capitals and bulbous bases. Inside, there is a 4-panel door with an overlight. To the left of the entrance is a camber-headed 6-pane window, followed by a 4-panel door with a flat head, and paired 6-pane windows at the left end with a continuous lintel.

At the right end of the building, there is a splayed gabled corner with three windows, featuring cambered voussoired openings. There is a blocked window in the center above a 4-panel door, flanked by diamond-glazed windows as previously described. A dummy window is present on the first floor to the right, along with a small recess in the gable. The right return has two additional diamond-glazed windows, a 2-light above a 3-light. The rear features two small-pane casements above a brick lean-to and a cross gable with a stack.

Projecting at right angles to the left of the front is a former coach-house and stable range, which steps forward midway along. There is a cambered carriage arch to the right with brick voussoirs and boarded doors; to the left, there is a boarded door and a blocked square window, both with deep stone lintels. A 20th-century plain-glazed window is located above the carriage arch, with a similar window on the roadside gable and a blocked door on the north side.

The interior has been modernized. The front entrance leads into the public bar, which features an altered fireplace with a large timber lintel straight ahead. The bar counter is situated in the splayed bay at the right end, with the lounge bar located behind it in the right return. There is a private area to the left of the front entrance.
