Description

This is an early 19th century house with later assembly rooms built onto the rear. The assembly rooms were likely constructed for the workers in the mills and woollen factories of Cynwyd and are shown on the 1891 Ordnance Survey map. The house is said to have been occupied by two generations of carpenters.

The building is a large, three-story structure composed of a front range and a gabled rear range, joined by a hipped roof over the front. The front range has been roughcast and whitewashed, with a slate roof and a red brick stack with yellow brick quoins near the top of the hipped roof pitch. It is a two-window facade with three stories and an attic. A full-length, lean-to porch canopy with a slate roof is supported by three timber posts. The main doorway is on the right side and features a half-lit, panelled door with margin glazing and an overlight. To the left is a large, fully glazed bay window with large panes. The first and second floors have twelve-pane hornless sash windows with flat heads. A large, central gabled dormer window projects from the attic, with slate-hung sides, bargeboards, and a finial, containing a round-headed window with a two-light small-pane casement and intersecting glazing under the arch. The north gable end has no openings, while the south gable end adjoins another building.

The adjoining rear range is flush with the gable ends of the front range, featuring an external brick stack on the east gable end. The north side, facing the lane, is three stories high with the floor levels elevated compared to the front range. The lower storey is primarily rubble stone, partially roughcast, with the openings surrounded by yellow brick. Red brick forms the first and second storeys, incorporating yellow brick detailing, including quoins, a string course, and window surrounds with segmental heads. The windows are mainly four-pane horned sashes with margin glazing. There are three windows on the second floor; two similar windows on the first floor are misaligned, with a smaller sash window to the far right set within a segmental head of red brick.

Number 1 encompasses the eastern portion of the rear range. The north side has 20th-century split doors set beneath a segmental brick head, flanked by a 20th-century top-hung window in an original opening to the left and a small casement window to the right with a concrete lintel. The east gable end is only two stories high on the left side where the ground rises and is constructed of rubble stone. A 20th-century open gabled porch is built against the stack, containing split doors. To the left, at second floor level, is a 20th-century cast iron balcony and inset French doors, likely replacing a former window. A very small light window is present on the gable. A small, 20th-century plain-glazed window to the right of the stack provides light to the first floor. The interior was not accessible at the time of inspection.
