Description

Islwyn Watkins Antiques, which includes the premises of W. Machin, Butcher, is a three-storey building with an attic and a roughcast front featuring freestone quoins. The slate roof has wide boxed eaves and a gable at the center, which is the left of three on the original front of Chandos House. The building has plain bargeboards, a pendant, and a finial. It features four-pane sash windows with deep plain reveals and heavy lintels. The shopfront has four lights and a half-glazed door beneath a projecting moulded cornice. To the right, there is a four-panelled door with a fanlight, which is in the position of the original pedimented doorpiece.

The side elevation facing West Street is also roughcast and has three storeys and a basement, reconstructed in 1932. It has a slate roof that is hipped towards the front and has a mansard at the rear, with boxed eaves on the former and coved eaves on the latter. The front part has two sash windows (only one on the second floor) and three dormers at the rear. There are three sash windows and a casement bay window below, along with a shop front for the butcher on the ground floor.

The rear of the building is roughcast with a brick stack, sash windows, and a lean-to. Inside, some fine 18th-century panelling with raised fields remains, particularly in the antique shop.
