Description
Richard Davis-Butcher's Shop is a 15th-century hall house that was refronted and extended towards the street in the 17th century. The building underwent later internal remodelling and features a 20th-century gable end with a shop front facing No 28.
The shop has a two-storey timber-framed jettied front, with the right side being roughcast and timber-framed, displaying applied half-timbering towards the front. A tall roughcast lateral chimney stack projects from the building, which has slate roofs. The early 17th-century facade showcases concave-sided diamond decoration on the bargeboarded gable, similar to that of Upper Dolley House in Dolley Green. The first floor has a three-light casement window adorned with similar timber decoration to the right. Below, there is Renaissance arcading consisting of three arches supported by abaci and pilasters, with two moulded brackets beneath the window and foliage ornamentation in the spandrels. A moulded bressumer is also present. The ground floor features a boarded door with brackets at the base and a pointed arch window to the right. The rear of the right range has two casement windows on the first floor, while a 20th-century bay window is located on the ground floor. The 17th-century extension has close studding with middle rails towards the front and a casement window above. The shop front wraps around the corner from the earlier front, featuring one casement window on the first floor. The c1900 gabled shop front includes a dentiled cornice, volute brackets, panelled pilasters at the sides, and a modern tiled base, with a six-light window on the first floor showcasing Arts and Crafts style stained glass and leading.
Internally, the later remodelling has divided the original 15th-century cruck open hall. Visible trusses include a ridge beam and purlings halved over the principals, along with fine cusping on the central cruck truss. Timber-framed partition walls and some panelling remain, particularly in the first-floor front room above the shop, which features later panelled supporting piers.
