Description
The Baptist Church, built in 1865 and renovated in 1922, features colourwashed rubble walls with dressed quoins and a projecting plinth. It has a slate roof adorned with cresting, and cusped bargeboards on both the main gable and the cross gable facing Norton Street. The front on Russell Street has three windows and a cusped quatrefoil above a plaque. The windows are four-light Y-traceried, with the central window raised over a boarded entrance. The Norton Street front has five windows, with an advanced gable at the center and foliated cornices on either side. Similar windows have hood moulds, and the raised center window displays some stylistically later tracery. A brace plate spans across the central window.
The plaque on the Norton Street front states: "Baptist Church erected 1865, renovated 1922. J E Morris - architect, J Pugh - Minister, J Richards - builder." Another plaque on the Russell Street front simply reads: "Baptist Church erected 1865." The interior has been altered to include galleries added in 1922.
