Description
Bronllys Castle House, which includes Castle Cottage, is a house built in the late 18th century and between 1830 and 1840. It is two storeys high, constructed of rubble stone with a slate roof. The house features three bays, with a cross wing at the eastern end and service additions at the western end, which is now known as Castle Cottage.
At the junction of the wing, there is a pilastered doorcase with panelled reveals and a moulded canopy, leading to a six-panelled door. The windows throughout the house are mostly nine-paned sash windows, except for the cross wing, which has 12-paned sashes on the ground floor that are margin glazed. The eastern elevation of the wing is gabled and includes a canted margin glazed bay window. Originally, the northern end of the wing was likely a single-storey service room, which was later raised to two storeys, featuring windows with brick dressings. The house has wide boxed eaves and red brick chimney stacks.
The later service wing, now Castle Cottage, has a 20th-century gabled porch and a half-glazed door, along with nine and 16-paned sashes. Bronllys Castle House is included at Grade II* due to its well-preserved late-Georgian architecture and its location within the inner bailey of Bronllys Castle. It also has group value with the Keep at Bronllys Castle and the Workshop and Gallery range. Additionally, it is part of Scheduled Ancient Monument No. B8.
