Description
The Elms is a 17th-century building featuring Tyrolean render and color wash over stone, topped with a stone slate roof. It has one storey and an attic, with a longhouse plan consisting of two bays. In 1962, the building was extended to the left over the original cross passage to create a kitchen. A gabled porch leads to a later boarded door for the living room, and there is a half-glazed door on the gable end. The front has an ovolo moulded window with a splayed reveal, while the rear features a window with diamond mullions. The upper floor has a continuous dormer with four metal-framed windows, and there is a door at the rear. A large gable stack with offsets is present.
The entrance is positioned against the main axial stack, with a stair leading to the rear. Inside, there are cross beams with cut chamfered stops and a stud and panel partition, which is partly reset, leading to the inner room that contains a gable stack with an oven. The building features three raised or upper cruck frames, with two closely spaced over the living room, and includes a morticed and pegged collar, with the blades trenched for a single tier of purlins. According to Jones and Smith, the first floor was originally undivided.
