Description

Great House Barn is an early to mid-19th century building. It is two storeys high and features a mix of Flemish and English bond brickwork, with plain pilasters on the south range and at the corners of the west range. The barn has rubble stone plinths and internal facings, slate roofs, although the rear east pitch is covered with corrugated asbestos, and it has plain wooden bargeboards.

The east range runs north to south and includes tall double wooden cartway doors divided into two parts at the re-entrant angle. An added rubble stone external stair leads to a boarded loft door, which partly obscures one of two cartshed openings that have segmental relieving arches over timber lintels. There are twin recessed arched openings on the south gable end, above which are tiered pigeon nest holes. The east side consists of six bays separated by pilasters, featuring vents and tall wooden cart doors on the opposite side. The west arm has three smaller arched openings on the ground floor, one of which is blocked, along with ventilation slits and loft openings; the west end gable has ventilation slits on two levels and a loft opening above. There is a rubble stone and corrugated iron lean-to on the north side, at the west end, and a 20th-century concrete block addition further along, facing Cottage Lane.

Inside, the barn retains lightweight trusses that are blackened, with collars, raking braces, and tie-beams resting on wall plates. It has two tiers of purlins, brickwork dressings, and timber lintels. There is a half floor within the south end. The cowhouse in the west range has a loft above and some timber strapping in the upper walls.
