Description
The workshop and gallery at Bronllys Castle House is an outbuilding that incorporates part of the 14th to 15th century hall range of the medieval castle. It was adapted and extended, likely in the early 19th century, to serve as stables and a carriage house for Bronllys Castle House, while still retaining some medieval features at the northern end. The structure is built from rubble stone and has a graded stone slate roof on the east side and Welsh slate on the west.
The building consists of three bays, with an artist's gallery at the north end, a workshop in the center, and a stable at the south end, along with attic accommodation above. There is a 19th-century lean-to stable at the rear. The windows are 19th-century timber, with two lights in most areas and three lights in the gallery, and there is a boarded door that is set slightly off-center. Three gabled dormers are present on the roof.
At the northern end, the medieval work features walls that are one meter thick, a high painted arched doorcase leading to the gallery, and a wall of approximately six meters at the rear. The gable end has a large stack with a fireplace that faces north and has been broken open, along with a later fireplace and flue added inside. The rear section of the building, now used as a woodstore, is integrated into the medieval structure.
Inside, the building may have originally had a transverse vault, which is now whitewashed, and it features tie and collar beam trusses. This building is included at Grade II* due to the significant medieval work associated with Bronllys Castle and has group value with the Keep at Bronllys Castle and Bronllys Castle House. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (part B 8).
