Description
The detached bell tower at the church of St. Mary dates from the 13th century and serves as a notable example of early medieval architecture. It is constructed from tightly laid laminated sandstone and features a tiled pyramidal roof topped with a central weathercock. The tower consists of two stages, with the lower stage set on a low plinth and the upper stage stepped in, showcasing two ogee-headed openings on each side. Additionally, there are small rectangular lights on the east, north, and west sides. A modern door is located on the west side, facing the church. This structure is designated as Grade II* due to its historical significance and rarity as a surviving example of a detached medieval belltower, contemporary with the occupation of the nearby castle.
