30 High Street

30 High Street is a building constructed around 1835 as a pair of houses, situated on a site with a longer history of occupation. By 1881, the ground floor of No 29 was being used as a shop, while No 30 was converted into a shop around 1950.

The exterior features a painted brick street elevation, with rough local rubble on the side and rear. It has a tiled roof with brick axial stacks located on the front and rear slopes. The symmetrical shop fronts, dating to around 1950, each have an outer doorway and a continuous fascia. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows, with 9-pane windows above, all featuring flat arched rendered heads with stressed keystones. The left gable displays a finely lettered tablet that reads 'Party Wall'.

Inside, the ground floor layouts have been altered due to the conversion to shops, but the upper accommodation largely retains its original form. Notably, there is a fine shallow spiral oak staircase that rises from the ground to the first floor in the short rear wing of No 29.

Overall, the building maintains much of its character as an early 19th-century pair and is part of a group at the upper end of High Street.
