Description

25 High Street is a building that may be part of a 17th-century terrace originally consisting of four dwellings. Some timber framing is still visible in parts of the row, although much of the exterior detail has been updated. Number 26 was originally two units but is now a single property.

The exterior features a rendered elevation facing the street, possibly covering a partial timber frame, with the framing exposed in the passageway between numbers 25 and 26. The building has a slate roof and a stone and brick axial stack on a short rear wing. It consists of a terrace of three houses, each designed as a single unit, and is low at two storeys with an attic within the roof. Numbers 24 and 25 have doorways to the left and a canted oriel shop window, which are recent additions. Above number 24, there is a renewed casement window and a catslide dormer in the roof. Number 25 features a 16-pane sash window and an inserted gabled dormer. To the right, there is a round-arched passage entry. Number 26 has a slightly wider frontage, with a doorway to the left and a large shop window added to the right. It also has two upper windows, both of which are inserted casements, and two gabled dormers within the roof.

This building is included as part of an important group of townhouses on High Street and is notable for representing the survival of a small urban vernacular terrace from the 17th century.
