Description
31 High Street is an early 18th-century vernacular town house. The front gable, which faces the street, has been reconstructed in the early 19th century and may indicate a change in the roofline to align with the street, as well as the addition of an attic storey. A stone set into the front wall is inscribed with the letters Ll over W M (Walter and Magdalen Lloyd) and the date 1715.
The building features a wide gable with a shallower gabled wing at the rear. The front is rendered, likely over rubble or brick, while the side wall and rear display exposed box-framed timbering of thin scantling. It has a slate roof. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front with a central door and small-paned windows on either side, along with a passage entry to the right. Above, there are 16-pane sash windows with cambered heads, and a smaller window has been renewed in an earlier opening at the gable apex.
This building is notable as an early 18th-century vernacular town house and is part of a group of similar structures at the upper end of High Street.
