Description
The Mermaid Inn is a Grade II listed building featuring a frontage range and a long rear wing. It is timber-framed, with the original structure enhanced by decorative framing applied around 1890 to the main elevation. The earlier heavy box-framing consists of square panels, with exposed brick infill visible on the side elevation and in the rear wing. The roof is plain tiled, having replaced thatch, and there is an axial brick stack located at the front of the roof to the right.
The building has two storeys and a two-window range. The ground floor is rendered, with a doorway offset to the left that features a battened plank door with ornamental hinges. To the right of the door is a three-light canted oriel window, and to the left is a smaller similar window; both have traceried lights with decorative leaded glazing. There is a passage entry to the right. The upper storey showcases decorative timber work, divided by a middle rail, with cusped close-studding below and quatrefoils above. Above the doorway is a canted oriel window, and to the right is a three-light casement window.
The long rear wing is also box-framed in square panels with brick infill, forming three principal bays, and has a plain-tiled roof. A side wall stack extends onto the passage. Inside, the single room in the frontage range features a ceiling that is panelled with transverse and axial beams, all of which have step-stopped chamfers, along with similar stop-chamfered joists.
