Description
29 High Street is a building constructed around 1835, originally designed as a pair of houses on a site with a longer history of occupation. By 1881, the ground floor of No 29 was being used as a shop, while No 30 was converted into a shop around 1950.
The exterior features a painted brick street elevation, with rough local rubble on the side and rear. It has a tiled roof with brick axial stacks located on the front and rear slopes. The symmetrical shop fronts date from around 1950, each featuring an outer doorway and a continuous fascia. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows, while the second floor has 9-pane sash windows, all with flat arched rendered heads and stressed keystones. The left gable includes a finely lettered tablet that reads 'Party Wall'.
Internally, the ground floor layouts have been altered due to the conversion into shops, but the upper floors largely retain their original form. A notable feature is the fine shallow spiral oak staircase that rises from the ground to the first floor in the short rear wing of No 29.
This building maintains much of its character as an early 19th-century pair and is part of a group of buildings at the upper end of High Street.
