Description
23 High Street is a two-storey house with an attic, built from painted brick and topped with a steep slate roof that features a brick axial stack on the left side. Originally designed with a four-window range, it now has a two-window range. The entrance is located to the right and consists of a battened plank door framed by a plain architrave and hood, accompanied by a 16-pane sash window. There is also a blocked doorway next to a similar window on the left side. The first floor originally had four windows with cambered brick heads, but the current windows are replacements. On the right, there is a hornless 16-pane sash window, and on the left, a renewed casement window with a transom, both of which have altered the original openings. The roof features two dormer windows, each with two lights and shallow leaded roofs. The rear elevation still retains some original windows with camber-headed openings and cast iron windows with transoms.
Inside, the entrance leads to a through passage, which is now blocked at the back. The internal wall exposes square panelled timber-framing. The house has a single unit, double pile plan, with an axial chimney. A cambered bressumer above the fireplace remains in the rear room, and there is an oak staircase against the upper end wall, featuring some turned balusters.
