Description
26 High Street is a building that likely forms part of a 17th-century terrace originally consisting of four dwellings. Some timber framing is still visible in parts of the row, although much of the exterior detail has been updated. Number 26 was originally two units but has been converted into a single property.
The exterior features a rendered facade facing the street, which may cover a partial timber frame, with the framing exposed in the passageway between Nos 25 and 26. The building has a slate roof and a stone and brick axial stack on a short rear wing belonging to No 25. The terrace consists of three houses, each with a single-unit plan, and stands at two stories with an attic space within the roof. Nos 24 and 25 have doorways to the left and canted oriel shop windows, which are recent additions. There is a renewed casement window above No 24 and a catslide dormer in the roof, while No 25 features a 16-pane sash window and an inserted gabled dormer. To the right, there is a round-arched passage entry. No 26 has a slightly wider frontage, with a doorway to the left and a large shop window inserted to the right. It also has two upper windows, both of which are inserted casements, and two gabled dormers within the roof.
This building is included as part of an important group of townhouses on High Street and is of interest as it represents the survival of a small urban vernacular terrace dating from the 17th century.
