Description
22 High Street is a Grade II listed building that, along with No 20, is part of a block of three houses built around 1740 by the Powis Estate, incorporating earlier materials. It was previously known as Plas Goch.
The exterior is constructed of brick and features a steep slate roof with gable end stacks. The building has two storeys and a four-window range. The ground floor shows signs of an earlier structure, with an exposed sill beam, corner post, and rail. There are paired central doorways framed by an early 19th-century architrave, which includes cusped panelling in the entablature and a shallow cornice hood. The doors are six-panelled and accessed by steps with central plain cast iron railings. The flanking windows are 16-pane sashes, while the upper windows are flush-framed 12-pane sashes with cambered brick heads and a plain sill band. The roof features two 2-light dormer windows with shallow leaded roofs. At the rear, there is a row of tall camber-headed windows, which are cast-iron casement windows with transoms.
This building is a fine example of early 18th-century urban architecture and is particularly significant as part of a larger development, representing the reconstruction of an earlier building.
