Description
34 High Street is an early 19th-century town house, likely built around 1820, on a site with a longer history of occupation. It may have been raised in height in the later 19th century, as suggested by the character of the upper storey and the pitch of the roof.
The exterior features render over brick and a slate roof with a gable end stack. The building has three storeys and a three-window range, with the entrance located to the left and a lower rear wing. The entrance consists of a six-panelled door with a lozenge overlight, framed by an architrave with reeded pilasters, panelled rebates, and a dentilled cornice above a projecting entablature. Next to the doorway is a fine bow window with small panes and an enriched cornice. The upper windows include 20-pane sashes on the first floor and later 4-pane sashes above, with a blind central window space. The rear elevation features a cast-iron casement window with gothic interlace.
The property is enclosed by railings that surround a narrow yard facing the street, which have spike finials and urns on the principal posts. This building is an exceptionally well-detailed example of an early 19th-century town house.
