Description

10 High Street is a timber-framed building with a concrete tiled roof, believed to have had a house on this site since the early 16th century, though the current facade suggests it was built around 1600. By 1757, it was operating as a public house known as The Upper Sun, and it later served as a lodging house. The building underwent restoration in 1927, during which the present shop front was added, and the timber framing was exposed.

The structure is two storeys high, featuring a main range with a short rear wing that was extended in the 20th century. The exterior showcases box-framing with three tiers of decorative panels, including cusped quatrefoils on the first floor. The shop front consists of an arcade of five bays supported by arched braced timber posts on a stone plinth, with a central doorway flanked by leaded shop windows and a passage entry to the right. A stone mounting block is attached to the left side. The upper windows likely date from the 1927 restoration but fit into earlier openings, as accommodated by the framing. There is also a single gabled dormer window in the roof.

Inside, the building has been heavily remodeled, likely during the 1927 restoration, but it retains an axial beam with a run-out chamfer stop in the left-hand unit, where an internal partition has been removed. This building is of special interest due to the high quality of its decorative framing, representing a fine example of a wealthy urban building from around 1600, and its 20th-century restoration is notable for its vernacular revival style.
