Description

9 High Street is a 17th-century timber-framed building with a concrete tiled roof, located in a historic context. Documentary records indicate that a house existed on this site by the early 16th century, while the current facade suggests it was built around 1600. It has served various purposes over the years, including a public house known as The Upper Sun by 1757 and later as a lodging house. The building underwent restoration in 1927, during which the present shop front was added and the timber framing was exposed.

The exterior features a two-storey main range with a short rear wing that was extended in the 20th century. The box-framing consists of three tiers of decorative panels with cusped quatrefoils visible on the first floor. The shop front creates an arcade of five bays supported by arched braced timber posts on a stone plinth, with a central doorway flanked by leaded shop windows and a passage entry to the right. A stone mounting block is attached to the left side. The upper windows likely date from the 1927 restoration but fit into earlier openings created by the framing. There is also a single gabled dormer window in the roof.

Inside, the building has been heavily remodelled, likely during the 1927 restoration, but it retains an axial beam with a run-out chamfer stop in the left-hand unit, where an internal partition has been removed. The building is particularly noteworthy for the quality of its decorative framing, representing a fine example of a wealthy urban structure from around 1600, with its 20th-century restoration being significant as a piece of vernacular revival architecture.
