Description

11A High Street is a low, two-storey building that likely dates back to the late 16th century when it was originally constructed as a small town house. A separate dwelling, known as No 11a, was added to the rear in the early 19th century. The pentice front of No 11 was likely added while it was still being used as a house, possibly in the early 19th century. The building has since been converted into a shop, and the shop front is modern.

The exterior features timber framing with a slate roof. The first floor displays square panelled box framing, and there is a complex roll-moulded bressumer above the passage entrance, indicating that the building was originally jettied. The lean-to shop front has a slate roof, with a central door flanked by small-paned shop windows that are recent insertions. Above, there is a renewed casement window. The rear wing, No 11a, likely consisted of two small dwellings originally, constructed of brick and stone. It is also two storeys high, with each unit having a doorway and a flanking casement window (one of which has been renewed), both featuring cambered brick heads.

No 11 is a well-preserved example of a small timber-framed town house and is of significant interest for its representation of typical urban plot development, with later cottages forming a rear wing as infill on the burgage plot.
