Description

This is a terrace of houses, originally part of a larger mansion, dating from the 18th century. The buildings are constructed of stone, with some areas limewashed or painted, and number 17 rendered with a roughcast finish. The roofs are steeply pitched, covered in slate, and feature rooflights, with brick stacks at the ends and along the front ridge.

The windows and doors are irregularly spaced, with most openings having a cambered head and shallow reveals. The majority of windows are 12-pane sashes, although some have been replaced with UPVC casements. The front doors are mainly boarded, with variations in style between properties. The terrace has two storeys, plus a very deep attic, with a notably wide space between the first-floor windows and the eaves.

Number 17 has two windows and a replaced front door with a deep hood. Number 19 has a single window range, and shows remains of a doorway with a hollow chamfer, and a corbelled wall above which formerly supported a chimney. Number 21 also has two windows, with a relieving arch above the ground-floor window. Number 23 has a single window range and a relieving arch above its ground floor window. Number 25, with a contrasting painted finish, has a single window range with larger 16-pane sashes set higher than those in number 23, a broad relieving arch over the first-floor window, and a modern-style door with an overlight. Number 27 is wide, with a tripartite sash window on the ground floor and a round-headed doorway featuring a panelled, part-glazed door with an overlight containing radial glazing bars. A smooth render quoin-strip runs along the front. The roofs of numbers 25 and 27 are covered with artificial slate and do not align with the rest of the terrace.

The original frontage of the building is at the rear. A projecting bay at number 25 is likely the site of the former main entrance. Numbers 21 and 23 have hoodmoulds covering the first-floor windows, and number 19 retains a hoodmould with the remains of quadruple arched heads to the window lights, all featuring wide relieving arches. The glazing of the windows varies throughout the terrace, and ground floor extensions have been added.

At the rear of the building are stone mullion windows with dripmoulds and bearing arches. A barrel-vaulted second floor runs throughout the building beneath the roof.
