Description

The Baptist Church is a classical-style chapel built in the 19th century. It features a gable-end facade with a front made of scored stucco-rendering and roughcast on the sides. The roof is slate with a shallow pitch and overhanging eaves. The front has long rectangular windows set in reveals with moulded painted stone architraves, although the glazing has been replaced. A wide central doorway is framed by a pedimented wooden doorcase that includes a triglyph frieze, clasping pilasters (antae), and an architrave leading to recessed double 6-panelled doors. The building has a plinth with ventilation grilles. On the east side, there are three long round-headed windows, while the west side has none. The church is enclosed by railings and gates with spear finials that extend from the side walls and across the front, ending in stone piers. At the rear, there is a gabled cross wing for the Sunday School, which has a two-window range and a part artificial slate roof.

Inside, the church has plain white painted plaster walls, except for painted text above the pulpit. The ceiling is flat and also painted white. There is a rear gallery that is raked, featuring a plain panelled front supported by two slender cast iron columns. A single staircase with stone steps leads to the gallery, equipped with a ramped handrail and stick balusters. The entrance lobby is shallow, boarded, and part glazed. The pews are boarded and have low doors. The wide carved wooden pulpit has two tiers of short balusters and an integral lectern at the center, with double stairs featuring twisted balusters. To the left of the pulpit is a small pipe organ with painted pipes, made by Chas R Gill and Son of Cardiff. Vertical panelled doors on either side of the pulpit lead to a rear Sunday School/Meeting Room that includes a small fireplace.
