Description

The Kings Head Hotel is a Georgian-fronted hotel located in the town centre. It dates back to the 17th century, with later additions. The front of the building is rendered and painted, with a slate roof featuring three slate-hung gabled dormers on the left side, boarded eaves, and a red brick stack on the left. It is two storeys and an attic, with a cellar beneath. Originally, the windows were horned sashes, but these have now been replaced with UPVC frames; the original six-pane sashes remain in the attic windows. The modern render is swept down below the first floor and over a stone plinth at ground floor level. Modern signage, including metal lettering and a public house sign, is present. The modern entrance doors, one to the bar on the left and one to the hotel on the right, both have deep hoods, with flanking pilasters on the left.

Inside, the bar on the left retains a beamed ceiling with closely spaced, unchamfered joists and a deep chamfer to a narrow cross beam. A stepped stone fireplace is located to the left gable, with a low timber lintel. The wall appears to have been built out beyond the line of an earlier, larger-stoned fireplace. The right (east) end of the bar is stepped down, and there is evidence of a former partition or, alternatively, a reused cross beam – now supported by two feather stop chamfered vertical posts. The joists are remarkably long. A small stone fireplace with a timber lintel is also present. The staircase handrail sweeps upwards, and the first floor features panelled and boarded doors. One room contains a massive cross beam with fillet stop chamfer. Part of the 17th century roof structure is visible in the attic rooms. The right-hand half of the building has been extensively modernised for hotel use, with later additions to the rear.
