Description
Newmarket Cottage, located at 39 and 41 New Market Street, is a pair of late Georgian cottages. They are roughcast rendered and painted, topped with a slate roof featuring a long and narrow central brick stack. The cottages are two storeys high, each with a two-window range of 16-pane sash windows on the first floor. The ground floor has a shallow bowed 20-pane window that includes single pane opening casements. There is a plinth, and the doorways are located at the right and left ends of each cottage.
The side elevation of Newmarket Cottage is attached to the Kings Head Hotel on Old Market Street, which has an asymmetrical design featuring 16-pane sash windows on each floor and a narrow side door.
Inside, the cottages retain original features such as panelled shutters and doors, a staircase with a wreathed handrail and stick balusters, simple plaster mouldings, and one painted fireplace. However, much of the interior was reordered in the mid-20th century.
