Description
Nos. 17-27 Old Market Street form a terrace of houses, originally part of a larger mansion, dating from the 18th century. The buildings are constructed of stone, with some areas limewashed or painted, and number 17 rendered with a roughcast finish. They have steep-pitched slate roofs with rooflights, featuring brick end, ridge, and lateral stacks.
The windows and doors are spaced irregularly, with most openings having cambered heads and shallow reveals. The windows are largely 12-pane sashes, although number 17 includes UPVC casement windows and a replaced door. Number 19 retains the remains of a doorway with a hollow chamfer, and a corbelled-out wall above which represents the remains of a chimney. Number 21 features the remains of a relieving arch above the large ground floor window, while number 23 also has a relieving arch above its ground floor window. Number 25 is distinctively painted and has large 16-pane sashes set higher than those in number 23, along with a broad relieving arch to its first-floor window and a modern-style door with an overlight. Number 27 is also partly roughcast and partly painted, with a wide front and a tripartite sash window at ground level, plus a round-headed doorway with a panelled, part-glazed door and radial glazing bars. The roof of numbers 25 and 27 is of artificial slate and is not continuous with the main roof. Originally, the main frontage faced the rear, although it has been significantly altered. Number 25 has a projecting bay, possibly the location of the original entrance. Numbers 21 and 23 have hoodmoulds to their first-floor windows, and number 19 has a hoodmould with remains of quadruple arched heads to the lights, all with high, wide relieving arches. Glazing varies throughout the terrace, with ground floor extensions present along the front.
At the rear of the building are stone mullion windows with dripmoulds and bearing arches. A barrel vaulted second floor runs throughout the building, beneath the roof.
