Description
The building at 27, 29, and 29A Castle Street dates from the mid to later 19th century. It presents a symmetrical red brick facade, designed with a heavy rusticated stone effect to the quoins, which extend up to a moulded parapet with shaped coping. A moulded string course runs between the floors, topped by a heavy moulded cornice. The upper floors are articulated with central windows and flanking brick bays, also featuring rusticated quoins. The cornice and parapet project forward over these bays, with moulded stepped bases at first-floor level. The windows are sash windows with segmental heads, with the central windows being wider and without glazing bars. A central archway with a rusticated surround provides access at ground-floor level, though the shop fronts on either side have been modernised.
To the rear of No. 27 is a three-storey timber-framed wing, clad in tiles, likely dating to the 17th or early 18th century. This wing is characterised by its jettied second floor and a hipped roof covered in old tiles. A mid-17th century warehouse is situated behind the yard adjoining the wing of No. 29A at a right angle, featuring a queen post roof with butt purlins and plain wind braces.
Nos 27 to 35, being the odd numbers, form a cohesive group.
