Description
47 Castle Street is a late 18th-century building that stands three storeys tall, constructed of red brick. The wood cornice has been renewed and features decorative patterae. At the top, there is a plain brick parapet with stone coping. The upper floor has three sash windows, each with flush architrave frames, no glazing bars, and flat rubbed brick arches. Originally, the ground floor had two wide shuttered windows and a six-panel door beneath a plain frieze and a small moulded cornice. While the frieze and cornice have been retained or renewed, the rest of the ground floor has been refronted in a "Georgian" style for use as office premises. The rear elevation has a hipped slate roof with two sash windows on each floor that have glazing bars, and a central entrance featuring a doorcase with stucco pilasters and an entablature. Nos 41 to 49 (odd) form a group.
