Description
Nos 63 and 65 on Castle Street are a pair of buildings that date back to the early 16th century, although they were refronted in the 18th century. The two-storey structure features a painted brick front with an eaves band and a steeply pitched gable end roof covered in old tiles. There is a flat-roofed dormer above two windows and a central panel on the first floor. The windows have flush architrave framed sashes without glazing bars. The ground floor has a later 19th-century shop front, which is flanked by pilasters topped with heavy paired brackets.
On the ground floor, the north wall, which can be seen in the adjacent passage leading to Ivy Place, displays exposed timber framing, including a post and bressumer. At the rear, there is a gabled brick wing with irregular casement windows. Inside, some of the framing is visible in the north front wall, featuring a curved brace. The roof is trussed and includes a collar tie, curved braces, land braces, and clasped purlins.
Nos 63 to 67B (odd) are part of a group of buildings of historical significance.
