Description

No 79 and No 81 on Castle Street are early 17th century buildings with timber framing that have been altered over time. No 79 is three storeys high, with a ground floor that was originally plastered stone but is now brick. The upper floor is tile hung and overhangs the lower level, topped by an old tile roof at the gable end. The second floor features a casement window, while the first floor has an original but altered four-light mullioned and transomed rectangular bay window with narrow sidelights and plain glass. Above this window, there is a low-pitched gable with leaded glass that has a fretted edge. The window sill is moulded and supported by ogee-shaped corbels. The ground floor has been modified with a modern window, and there is a door to the left with a 19th-century Gothic surround. The end gables of the house are tile hung, and a large brick chimney on the right side has been renewed. Inside, the first floor contains 17th-century panelling and a fireplace.

No 81 is a one-storey building with an attic, featuring a gable front that is hung with scallop tiles. It has 19th-century carved bargeboards with an elaborate leaf design at the base of a now-broken finial. There is a small rectangular two-light bay window with a low gable that is leaded with a scalloped edge, supported on brackets adorned with painted plaster female heads. The ground floor has a late 19th-century shop.

Nos 77 to 87 (odd), No 2 Avon View, and Nos 91 to 95 (odd) form a group.
