Description

No 93 Castle Street is a Grade II* listed building with origins dating back to the 15th or 16th century, featuring a later 18th-century facade. The building is two storeys high and constructed of red brick, with a distinctive diamond cut brick eaves cornice. It has a steeply pitched old tile roof with a hipped section at the front.

On the first floor, there is a blind window to the left and an early 19th-century canted bay window to the right, which has sash lights with restored glazing bars, a cornice, and a panelled apron. The ground floor features a flush architrave framed sash window on the right and a door with six fielded panels on the left. This door is adorned with a heavy moulded architrave, a glazed five-pane frieze, and is flanked by scrolled brackets with "Chinoiserie" patterns. Above, there is a moulded dentil cornice and a pediment, with two stone steps leading up to the door.

The rear elevation retains a timber-framed gable, although some beams have been renewed, and the last bay to the west has been demolished. Timber framing is also visible on the side of the building. Inside, there is a massive rebuilt 15th-century ashlar fireplace with a timber bressumer, along with a dragon beam and visible joists.

Nos 77 to 87 (odd), No 2 Avon View, and Nos 91 to 95 (odd) form a group with this building.
