Description
No 42 High West Street is a Grade II* listed building dating from the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of variegated dull red brick with stone dressings and features a three-window front, two storeys, and an attic. The building has rusticated stone quoins and a modillion cornice, topped with a plaintile roof that includes one dormer. The sash windows are adorned with moulded stone architraves and keystones. The doorcase, which may have had its paint stripped or could be a restoration, features a round-headed opening, a fanlight, pilasters, and console brackets. Inside, there is a "Carpenters' Gothic" staircase with a clustered columnar newel, a delicate ramped handrail, a Chinese Chippendale balustrade, and exceptional Rococo ornamentation on the closed string. Nos 41 to 45 High West Street form a group with this building.
