Description
No 77 on Castle Street is an early to mid 18th-century building that stands two storeys tall. It features a tough cast front and a steeply pitched gable end roof covered with old tiles. The building has a stepped brick eaves cornice. Originally symmetrical, the front was altered around 1900 with the addition of a large seven-light bay window that has bowed side lights, causing the rough cast apron to break through the band between the storeys. On the first floor, there are two flush framed sash windows to the right, while the ground floor has three similar windows with later glazing. There are two doorways flanking the ground floor; the left doorway has six fielded panels, while the right doorway has eight panels. The left-hand door features an architrave surround, and the right-hand door is framed by panelled pilasters with shaped brackets above that support a pedimental hood. Inside, there is a notable mid-18th-century staircase with columnar balusters and square newels. Nos 77 to 87 (odd), No 2 Avon View, and Nos 91 to 95 (odd) form a group.
