Description

No. 91 Castle Street is a Grade II* listed building, originally constructed in the 15th century and later refronted in the 18th century. This two-storey structure features a stucco façade with a moulded modillion eaves cornice and a steeply pitched old tile roof at the gable end. The first floor has three windows with flush architrave framed sashes, which have later glazing. The ground floor showcases a late 18th or early 19th century symmetrical shop front with two windows and a central door, flanked by thin pilasters and a moulded cornice, with a modern fascia added.

To the left, there is an arched passage entrance that leads to Avon View. The south wall displays timber framing with brick infilling, while the rear of the building features a jettied timber frame with beam ends projecting below a deeper overhang over the passage. The steeply pitched gable reveals an exposed arched brace collar truss with plaster infilling, although the ground floor has been replaced with brick. The first floor includes a 17th century rectangular bay window with five small lights, narrow side lights, moulded mullions, and a sill supported by brackets with turned pendants. Inside, the first floor has a "hall" at the rear with an arched brace collar truss roof.

No. 91 Castle Street, along with Nos. 77 to 87 (odd), No. 2 Avon View, and Nos. 91 to 95 (odd), forms a group of buildings of historical significance.
