Description

Market House Chambers and Martins Bank is an early 18th-century building located on Castle Street. It stands three storeys high with an attic and features an elaborate brick front with a stuccoed ground floor. The façade is accentuated by four tall stuccoed pilasters that extend to the centre of the second-floor windows, adorned with strips of triglyph frieze, with one large triglyph above each pilaster. The building has a moulded and bracketed cornice that is broken forward over the pilasters, with stuccoed piers that form part of the brick parapet, topped with stone coping. The roof is covered with old tiles.

The building includes three casement dormer windows and four segmental-headed windows on the second floor, each with keystones and raised surrounds. The sashes have later glazing bars, while the first floor features four flat-headed windows without glazing bars. The ground floor has altered fenestration but retains the original six-panelled door on the left. This door is framed by an engaged Ionic column doorcase that supports an entablature with a bolection frieze, a modillion cornice, and a pediment.

Inside, the first-floor room at the front boasts a finely moulded plaster ceiling from the mid to late 18th century, featuring a central sunburst. There is also a good oval staircase from the late 18th century, which has been altered at the ground floor level. At the rear, there is an addition from around 1778 that includes a first-floor room with a fine doorcase and plaster ceiling.
